3 erratic driving behaviors that point to a drunk driver

On Behalf of | Oct 8, 2025 | Car Accidents

Unfortunately, driving under the influence remains despite the campaign efforts to combat it. Drunk driving contributes to thousands of traffic accidents that can be fatal for victims.

Recognizing the signs of an impaired driver is vital for your safety and the safety of others. This knowledge can help road users react before their life is put in danger.

1. Weaving or drifting between lanes

A driver who is intoxicated may struggle to maintain a straight path. For this reason, other road users may notice them weaving across lanes or drifting toward oncoming traffic. This behavior is especially noticeable on straight roads or highways where lane discipline is usually more apparent. It’s wise for road users to steer clear of drunk drivers because their unpredictable behavior can quickly escalate into an accident.

2. Sudden braking or inconsistent speed

Intoxicated drivers often exhibit delayed reactions and impaired judgment, leading them to apply the brakes unnecessarily or accelerate and decelerate without apparent reason. They may slow down well below the speed limit or come to abrupt stops at green lights or in the middle of the road.

These unpredictable movements can be extremely dangerous, particularly in high-traffic areas. They increase the risk of rear-end collisions and can cause confusion among other drivers. Maintaining a safe distance and remaining vigilant to these behaviours can help road users avoid potential accidents.

3. Ignoring traffic signals or signs

Drivers under the influence may fail to observe basic traffic rules because alcohol impairs decision-making abilities and reduces a driver’s awareness of their surroundings. Such behavior can be catastrophic at busy intersections or pedestrian crossings.

By staying alert and acting responsibly when they notice these behaviors, road users can lower the risks of getting involved in a drunk driving accident. However, should an accident transpire, affected road users should hold the drunk driver accountable, regardless of whether the victims had noticed the erratic behavior.
